skin 2

Winter is fast approaching. And sure enough your skin will be among the casualties of the coldness and dryness brought about by this season. In winter, outdoor humidity is in the lowest levels. Meanwhile, as you use the heater more often inside your home or office, the level of skin moisture is sapped further. So in winter, Santa is not only the one who will come to town, it will also be the time for dry and scaly skin.

To make matters worse, your dry skin may also be aggravated by your poor diet. The food that you eat plays a major role in keeping a sufficient level of skin moisture. And speaking of a moisturized skin, how many glasses of water do you drink each day? Not much. Most people will not even touch a glass of water until they feel parched.

Then there is age and genetic factors. As you age, your skin’s ability to self-moisturize declines. This is why older people generally have wrinkles and blemishes on their skin. And if you take a look at members of your genetic line and they have dry skin, you may well expect that you will have the same skin type when you reach their age or even earlier in your life.

Dry and unprotected skin can be a big problem. As the skin is the largest of all the organs of the human body, it is hard to imagine that such an important part of the body is left at the mercy of climate changes and fouled-up surroundings. Just think about what will happen if your skin just stopped functioning. Which organ is going to balance body temperature or handle your sense of touch? Above all, which organ is going to determine whether you have beautiful features?

Now you may think that there is not much hope for your skin. Like a well in the desert, your skin is bound to dry up; and then wrinkles and age spots will come next. After all, you can not stop winter from coming. And you definitely can not turn back the wheels of time nor can you alter your genetic traits to have soft and smooth skin. Even if you can certainly try to change the food you eat and drink plenty of water, you would think there is not much that you can do to save your skin from dryness.

Well, you’re wrong! Despite the presence of harsh environmental conditions and other factors that are beyond your control, you can still maintain a healthy skin. Always remember that when it comes to the health of your skin, it is always about moisture. In fact, the skin has oil glands that provide the natural lotion needed to keep the skin from drying out.

The key to keeping your skin soft, smooth, and younger-looking as ever is to nourish and rejuvenate it with sufficient moisturizers. In short, you need to help the skin’s glands in providing moisture to your skin. Eating the right food and drinking lots of water provide a good start, but these efforts are not enough.

In an age when astringent chemicals have become important components in manufacturing cosmetics and other derma products, one can never be sure how the skin will react to most skin care products out in the market. There is always a big chance that the soap or lotion you are using can harm your skin. Hence, it is important that you carefully choose the derma products that you apply on your skin; a good way to go about this is to always go for skin care products that are made with 100% natural ingredients.

Whether you’ve noticed your puppy scratching more often than usual, or you have a dog that’s always had skin problems, it is important to take a good look the issue and treat not only the symptoms, but the root cause.

Dog skin problems have a variety of different causes, and when you figure out which one is causing your pet’s itches and irritations, you’ll be well on your way towards solving the problem for good.

Probably the most common dog skin condition is irritation caused by fleas or other parasites. Despite being completely treatable, far more dogs have fleas than you might believe. Fleas and other similar parasites can definitely get out of hand when they are treated incorrectly. When you are spot treating your pooch, give yourself a reminder stating when the next dose needs to be.

A single round of flea removal will certainly lessen the intensity of the problem, but remember that you can only be sure that they are gone after a full run of treatment. Don’t risk them coming back by only giving your dog one round of treatment.

Fleas and other parasites are a situational issue when it comes to dog skin problems. What happens if the condition is chronic, or worse, even permanent? While a vet can run a few tests and let you know what might be going on with your dog, you can often tell what is going just be watching closely.

First think about what kind of dog skin condition your dog might have. If your dog is chewing her skin excessively and you find a thick, odorous brown film on the skin or inside the ears, “yeast” is most likely the problem. If your dog has small red raised bumps on her skin, it could also be a bacterial infection.

Some examples of the most common causes of dog skin conditions are environmental and/or poor diet. It can be difficult to pinpoint where allergies stem from. However with a little observation as well as fine tuning the diet, most skin conditions can be corrected.

Dog skin problems can be evidenced by chewing or overly-vigorous scratching at the skin. Allergies are the most severe when the immune system is low. Scratching, chewing and rubbing of the face are often allergy symptoms that also indicate that a dog is not receiving everything he needs nutritionally.

A dog’s digestive tract has a very important role in keeping the dog healthy, and it could be that the digestive tract isn’t serving her as well as it should. Do you solely keep your dog on a diet of kibble? If so, her digestive tract can be working overtime to provide her body with the digestive enzymes that her body lacks. Because the pancreas can only make so many enzymes, it will be weakened and thus weaken her entire immune system.

Dogs are omnivorous and part of the enzymes they use should come from their food. Unfortunately the enzymes they would get from eating things like meat or vegetables are destroyed if the food is heated, something that happens when kibble is processed. One easy solution to this problem is to make sure that your dog gets the enzymes she needs. While some people do this by switching over to a raw diet of meats and vegetables, you can just as easily do this by placing your dog on a premium dog food and adding a “live” enzyme to his daily diet.

A purely kibble diet can actually reduce your pet’s ability to bounce back quickly from things like surgery and illness, while a premium dog food will get her back into shape in no time at all. Many people have seen their pet’s health improve exponentially when they start paying more attention to what they are feeding them. Check to see if the food that feed your dog is a premium food. Meat (not meat byproducts) should be the first ingredient. Although all kibbles pretty much look the same, they are not. For a dog to function at high efficiency, diet is critical.

Dogs that are fed “Live” digestive enzymes regularly are healthy and full of life. A healthy diet slows the aging process and allows owners quality time with their best friend. Enzymes for dogs can be purchased in tablet or powder form. Most dogs eat these amazing proteins willingly when sprinkled on top of their food or given in the form of a treat.

Adding digestive enzymes to your dog’s diet can go a long way towards making sure that she has a healthy happy life.

The pH (power of hydrogen) factor is a term most of us have heard but which few understand the significance of as it relates to skin care. Calculated on a scale of one to 14, pH refers to the levels of acid or alkaline in a substance. Below seven is acidic, above is alkaline, and seven - the approximate optimum level for the body - is neutral. However, skin has a different pH and to avoid and treat dry skin, it is important to choose natural skin care treatment products that have the proper pH balance.

The pH of normal skin ranges from 4 to 6.5, which is slightly acidic. This acidic environment is referred to as the skin’s ‘acid mantle’. It contains a number of different acids including lactic acid, amino acids and free fatty acids. One of the major functions of the acid mantle is to protect the skin and body from the absorption of bacteria. As bacteria cannot survive in an acidic environment, maintaining the correct level of acidity is vital.

If the acid mantle is disrupted, the skin also becomes more susceptible to damage. Although acid and alkaline are on opposite ends of the spectrum, either disrupts the pH and either can cause dry skin.

Alkaline stronger than pH 8 is very irritating to the skin and, unfortunately, the majority of skin care treatment products and household cleansers are far too alkaline. Most skin care soaps have a pH factor of 9 to 11 and many household cleansers range between 10 and 12. Oven cleaners come in around pH 13, which is why using rubber gloves is recommended. Some skin care treatment products are also too acidic. These products generally fall under the heading of peels and blemish or acne treatments and contain high concentrations of glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid and so on.

When the acid mantle is disrupted by using skin care treatment that is too acid or alkaline, it takes about 14 hours for the skin to get back to normal. However, by that time we’ve usually used the products again so, in fact, the damage never really gets repaired. The result is apparently permanent dry skin.

Fortunately, the condition is not actually permanent and you can start improving it by reading product labels. Often a label will state the pH or describe the product as ‘pH balanced’ which is supposed to denote a pH that approximates that of the skin - although, to be certain, I would look for the number, not just the ‘pH balanced’ designation. Look for skin care treatment products that are between pH 4 and 7 and you will be on your way to preventing and treating dry skin.

Online shopping is in a booming spree as more retailers take their business to online stores what they call as e-tailors (electronic retailers) instead of traditional brick and mortar stores. As per a study conducted by the National Retail Federation there are approximately 52 million people search the net hunting the best deals. One can find online coupons everywhere like emails, newsletters and websites. Unfortunately, counterfeit and fraudulent coupons appear very often. As a result many stores had stopped accepting internet-based coupons altogether.

A recent study conducted by The Grocery Manufacturer’s Association (GMA) says that coupon fraud costs manufacturers and retailers over 500 million of dollars each year. But the real victim is the legitimate consumer as these losses are passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices and lowered promotional offers.

Every consumer needs to know their coupon rights in order to enjoy tremendous savings on the coupon offers while preventing the coupon frauds as it ultimately affects them only. Trading and selling coupons is illegal as per Federal Trade Commission regulations. The only usage of coupon is according to them cutting it from the newspapers or any other source and uses it towards purchase of the specified products.

Coupon auctions are declared as illegal by the federal authorities. No body can sell the coupon itself in bulk for some consideration. Actions sites prohibit many kinds of coupon auctions, but sometimes unscrupulous sellers slip through. Many of these illegal sellers claim to be selling a coupon clipping service and not the actual coupons. But what they not say is that coupons the coupon you buy is not valid once you buy them as they are nontransferable.

All coupons should be redeemed within its expiry period. As expired coupons has no value, typing to use them or sending them to defense personal on a false notion that they can use it for another six month will end in paying more cost by consumer themselves.

Counterfeiting coupon is one of the major hurdles for shoppers and manufacturers. Counterfeiting coupons is illegal and carries same penalty and jail term as counterfeiting money. Altering coupons in any way by changing the bar code, coupon offer, or even the expiration date is coupon considered to be a fraud and punishable under law.
Some federal and voluntary organizations specialize in prosecuting the people who commit coupon frauds. Groups like these are helping to make everyone safer, because many coupon fraud schemes in the past have had links with organized crime, terrorist organizations, drug cartels, and money laundering operations

As a person ages it is normal to see the appearance of wrinkles and age spots. Elderly people can also develop skin disorders that can lead to serious medical problems. Older people need to give their skin more care than when they were younger. This is important because older skin is less oily, less elastic and thinner. It will bruise easier and take longer to heal when cut.

To protect against most kinds of skin cancer at any age use a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Also consider wearing long sleeves and a shady hat to give protection from the sun.

If you experience any of the following symptoms call a health care professional or go to the emergency room:

• Sudden, severe generalized itching, which can be a sign of liver or kidney disease, thyroid disorder or allergy

• Blisters or rash on forehead or temple with inflammation or pain in the eye. This could be indication of shingles involving the eye, which is an emergency that must be treated immediately.

Call a health care professional during office hours if you experience any of the following problems:

• Severe itching on underarms, abdomen, hands, wrists and groin, which can be a sign of scabies or mites and is easily treated. Sometimes scabies and mites can be picked up during a hospital stay

• If a mole grows in size, larger than one-quarter inch, are discolored (pearly blue, black or red and irregular shape) or if moles bleed

• A skin problem that starts or becomes worse just after starting a new medicine, increasing dose, or finishing the course of a medicine

• If a skin ulcer stays longer than two weeks without healing or grows in size

Dry and itchy skin may be more of a problem in winter when there is less humidity. Consider the following as suggestions to prevent or treat dry, itchy skin:

• After shower or bath, gently pat skin with a towel, but leave the skin moist. Apply a lotion, body oil or moisturizer that is high in petroleum such as AquaphorTM or EucerinTM. Avoid moisturizers with perfume or alcohol; these will dry and irritate the skin

• Use warm, not hot water for your bath or shower and keep them short. Do not scrub the skin roughly. Use a soft cloth or sponge. Use glycerin soap or moisturizing cream such as ToneTM or DoveTM and rinse off well.

• If you experience problem dry spots, try applying petroleum jelly to the troubled areas after bath or shower. If you use petroleum jelly be sure to wear pajamas and/or sock to protect bedding and clothing.

• Change bed sheets and clothing often. Wash clothes and sheets in detergents free of perfumes and fabric softeners that could irritate the skin. Be sure to rinse clothes and bedding thoroughly. An older person should wear cotton. Synthetics and other fabrics can be irritating to the skin.

• Drink plenty of water. Decrease us of caffeine and alcohol.

Chicago, Arlington House, Sunday, October 23, 2005, 6:15 am

Yesterday, after our lovely Austrian breakfast we went downtown to the Chicago Cultural Center, the main downtown information hub for tourists, to ask some questions about the Pullman Historic District, a planned industrial community, built in the 1880s by industrial magnate George Pullman, creator of the famous Pullman sleeper cars. We figured this would be an interesting place to visit since it brings together architecture, social and industrial history, and it would really give us insight into one of the most interesting personalities of Chicago’s history.

To get more information about this neighbourhood we talked to one of the volunteer greeters who staff the Chicago Cultural Center and offer their local expertise to visitors free of charge. The Chicago Greeter program today offers 150 greeters speaking 20 languages and the Greeter program is one of the best ways of getting to know the city through the eyes of a local resident.

As a matter of fact, I had registered electronically for a Chicago Greeter Tour prior to my departure, but something had gone wrong with my registration and as a result I was not assigned a greeter. The good thing is that the City of Chicago also offers “InstaGreeters” - local volunteers / experts who take people on downtown walking tours without the necessity of a prior registration.

This is how we happened upon our very own personal InstaGreeter tour: Chicago Greeter and local expert Don talked to us a bit about the Pullman Historic District, but the more we talked, and the more he saw that we were really interested, he asked us whether we wanted a 20 minute tour of the Chicago Cultural Center. Considering that this is a Chicago landmark we readily agreed.

The Chicago Cultural Center was originally dedicated in 1897 as the city’s original Public Library. It is an impressive limestone-faced building with intricate details, marble staircases, patterned ceilings, beautiful floor mosaics and two impressive stained glass domes. The cupola on the south side of the building is the world’s largest Tiffany stained-glass dome.

Today the Cultural Center houses one of the city’s Visitor Information Centers , various galleries, exhibition and meeting spaces, the Landmark Chicago Gallery which displays photographs from the permanent collection of Chicago landmarks, the 294-seat Claudia Cassidy Theater as well as the Studio Theater and various other facilities. You can even get married inside the Chicago Cultural Center.

Designed in the beaux-arts style by the Boston firm Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, the Chicago Cultural Center was completed in 1897 and dedicated as the city’s original Chicago Public Library. Completed at a cost of nearly $2 million, this remarkable monument was inspired by the neo-classical style of the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893.

To start off, Don told us that the name of the city of Chicago is an Indian word for “stinky onion swamp”. He also explained that Chicago is a city of superlatives: 3 of the world’s 10 highest buildings are located here. Chicago is also widely considered to be the birthplace of modern architecture and a living museum of architecture, showcasing some of the world’s most famous architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Gehry.

Chicago likes to do everything big. The world’s largest public library is located here: the Harold Washington Library Center houses 2 million books. Chicago is also home to the largest building in the United States (excluding the Pentagon): the Merchandise Mart has 90 acres of floor space, housed in an Art Deco landmark. Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park is one of the world’s largest fountains. Chicago also has the only river in the world that flows backwards. Engineers reversed the Chicago River in 1900 for sanitary purposes. Here’s another interesting fact: Chicago also has the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw.

Our local expert Don took us through the building and showed us the two stained glass domes, the exhibit halls, the photo collection of Chicago landmarks, and to keep going along the line of superlatives, Don gave us a brief synopsis of Millennium Park, located right across Michigan Avenue from the Chicago Cultural Center. The idea for Millennium Park was conceived by famous mayor Richard M. Daley, and with the help of private sector donations Millennium Park has become one of the most impressive outdoor venues anywhere. The project cost $495 million, of which $220 million were financed privately.

Our Chicago Greeter Don, a former vice-president at Motorola, is very knowledgeable about the history of Chicago and very passionate about his city. His pride in his city is obvious, and there is a lot to be proud of. For me, Chicago’s waterfront including Grant Park, the lakefront trail and its beaches are some of the most awesome features of this city. In total Chicago has more than 7300 acres of parkland, 552 parks, 33 beaches, nine museums, two world-class conservatories, 16 historic lagoons, 10 bird and wildlife gardens, and it’s not surprising that Chicago has won numerous awards including “Best City in the World” and other accolades.

With Don’s help we got a great overview of the Cultural Center and a bit of insight into Chicago’s interesting history. It was the perfect preparation for our tour of the Pullman Historic District, an industrial community created by George Pullman, an industrial despot, yet a foresightful social entrepreneur who, according to Don, was universally despised.

Armed with a bit of background knowledge we were looking forward to our exploration of Pullman’s social experiment.

Have you recently looked at yourself in the mirror and are perturbed about the skin blemishes, ingrown hair and acne which have hounded your skin for a very long time and just refuse to go? If yes, then your wait to have a clear blemish-free radiant skin is finally over with natural skin care creams, which have no potent side effects.

Your skin is the essence of your charisma and is a vital part of your personality. These ointments revitalize your skin and enhance your attractiveness. With the help of these creams, you can easily remove those grotesque age spots and stretch marks from your face, which have spoiled your looks.

These products can relieve you of the continuous itching, which are caused due to rashes, pimples, and dry patches on your skin. These creams can help you protect your delicate skin from the lethal UV rays and other harmful substances like toxic gases and dust, which are emitted due to environmental pollution.

These natural skin care creams are unique products, which can also help in repairing the damage caused to your skin by prolonged exposure to harmful solar radiation. These creams are also excellent anti-aging agents, which can take away a substantial number of years from your face and just leave people bemused over how old you are.

These sophisticated products have been discovered by harnessing nature after long years of research and a careful observation of the miraculous effects of nature’s vast resources. These effective products soothe your skin by a deep penetration, which results in subsequent moistening of your skin. In these days of heavy environmental pollution, our tender skin is replete with disorders caused from solar oxidation and other impairments like keratosis pilaris, actinic keratosis scales, and rosacea.

Therefore, natural skin care creams are becoming a must for every woman especially if she is working. These creams help in the removal of dead cells from your facial skin and also eradicate scars by painless dissolution of scar tissues through enzymatic hydrolysis unlike peeling where the patient is left in throbbing pain during the removal of scars.

These ointments also lead to an increase in the amount of glycosamingoglycans, which moisturize your skin by producing more water in the dermal cells.

These creams are an effective remedy and a must for all those people who suffer from oily skin and are prone to develop acne and facial scars on their skin. These creams protect the skin from all the micro-organisms that proliferate in the skin due to its oily characteristic. They also regulate the immune system and thus moderate the inflammatory reaction, which results after acne develops on your skin due to these organisms and bacteria and also kills the healthy cells.

These creams are the most painless and effective way to get rid of your acne, which has made you look appalling and lessened your popularity. Acne is predominantly found in those teenagers who are suffering from oily skin and therefore these kinds of creams are a sure-shot remedy for them.

**Please remember that no part of this article is intended to take the place of professional or medical advice. This article provides limited information and does not attempt to diagnosis or treat any illnesses or disorder. Please contact a qualified professional, regarding any health or mental health need.**

There is much discussion about depression and anxiety in women. This is an important topic for all women, because our emotional and mental health has a direct impact on our physical health. Women tend to be nurturers and caretakers and usually we take these responsibilities very seriously, so seriously that it is easy to neglect our own needs. This is usually not a healthy choice for ourselves. It is also not good for those who depend on us because, to give our best, we must be at our best. To be at our best, we must give ourselves the best care, which means, first and foremost, talking to our doctor about any feelings of depression or anxiety we may have.

Although, the causes of depression and anxiety are complex, one factor can be a sense of powerlessness. Believing that we can get what we want and need, is one of the best antidotes to powerlessness. So, in addition to seeking medical treatment for symptoms of depression and anxiety, being assertive and learning assertion skills can have a positive effect on a woman’s health and mental health. Learning assertion skills for women can be difficult, but here is a specific technique that may help.

The technique below was developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D as part of her overall Dialectical Behavior Therapy treatment for people with some pretty serious mental health issues, which include long term depression and anxiety. This does not mean that this technique is just for those who are ill. Most of her treatments emphasize life skills, that are used by healthy and effective people all over the world. You can learn more about her treatments at dbtselfhelp.com.

This skill for interpersonal effectiveness and better mental health uses the acronym DEAR MAN to help us remember each step.

D: Describe the situation. Try to keep it simple and to the point. People stop paying attention if you become too wordy. Avoid statements that judge and blame.

E: Express your feelings or opinions about the situation.

A: Assert your wishes. Ask for what you want. No judging or blaming others for not knowing.

R: Reinforce. Reward the other person for respecting you or explain why your request would benefit both of you.

M: Mindful-remain mindful of what you want. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted. Don‘t focus on unrelated issues that others brings up.

A: Act confident–you have every right to ask for what you want.

N: Negotiate–Be willing to listen to alternatives or ask for suggestions.

Here is what asserting yourself with this technique might be like if, for example, you wanted more help with clean up after dinner.

* Describe the situation: “I have been expected to clean up the kitchen each night after dinner.” Avoid things like, “No one cares about how much work I have to do.” “Nobody ever helps me.” “You are so lazy and selfish”, etc, you know the drill.

* Express your feelings or opinions about the situations: “I do not want to do it anymore.” or “I become frustrated, because then I don’t have time (or energy) to do other things that are important to me.”

* Assert your wishes: “I would like you to clean up after dinner.” “I want your help in organizing the kids to do the kitchen clean up.”

* Reinforce or reward: “Thank you so much for taking this seriously” or “If I get your cooperation on this, I will have more energy (time or interest) to devote to …” or “If I can get your help with this, I will be in a much better mood in the evening.”

* Mindful: “That is a concern for another time, right now I want to find a solution to the kitchen clean up.” Avoid bringing up other grievances or frustrations yourself.

* Act confident: Use phrases such as “I want…”, “I would like…”

* Negotiate: “If every night does not work, maybe we can try every other night.” or “Let’s try it for a week and see how it works”.

Remember to keep it simple. It can be helpful to write down what you plan to say, read through it and then make changes, before actually having the discussion. Asserting yourself may take some practice, but try to be patient with yourself and others as you learn this skill. The rewards for effectively asserting yourself will have lifelong benefits for you and your entire family.

‘The Sims Online’ is in a stunningly popular multiplayer version of the smash hit ‘The Sims’ series of PC games. Game makers are an incredibly bright group of people, and have quickly realized the huge potential in massively multiplayer online games. Not only are they dominating the market these days, they also contributed to a very hefty bottom line as far as profits go.

The well-known single player games, like The Sims series, are a one-time purchase and then that’s it. Massively multiplayer online games have to first be bought and then continuously subscribed to with a monthly fee. This is an example of something called continuity sales, which simply means that there is a revenue stream in addition to the original purchase. From a business perspective, MMO games are much more lucrative.

The reason why I bring all that up is that I think its important to keep that fact in mind when reviewing MMO style games like The Sims Online, you’ve got to keep dishing out money to play. While in the more traditional MMO games like ‘Everquest’ players have some clear cut goals and objectives dangled just out of their reach at all times to keep them playing, The Sims Online appears to be lacking direction.

Sometimes the single player Sims games appear to be without purpose. What I mean by that is you could play God and your little world and be the creator, but there was never any clear cut purpose to what you were doing and therefore after a while it would become boring. But the Sims online you only have control over a single player and that can really get old.

The single player Sims gave characters different chores and tasks that had to be completed, such as jobs or errands, but The Sims Online has a much looser set of objectives. You still have tasks to perform and still have to eat, but you objectives aren’t clear, nor is the timeframe in which to do them. The idea behind it, I manage, is to be able to interact with the other players.

While it’s kind of fun to dawn a digital mask and interact with people on the digital format because you certainly not be able to do this and realize, it doesn’t take very long before it begins to feel like some kind of graphical chat room. The few in game goals that there are, like making money or setting up a house, have severe restrictions and aren’t really all that rewarding due to an overall lack of depth to the in game economy, so really the only ‘point’ I found to keep playing was to meet people. Seeing how there are free chat rooms all over the place, I guess I just don’t feel like The Sims Online is worth a monthly fee, and maybe not even the original purchase price.

There are other computer software teams out there that I feel you get a much better bang for your buck with. You can just pop on the Internet and do a search on video games, or computer games and come up with thousands of titles to choose from. There are also a whole bunch of reviews that you can read in order to make comparisons. So go ahead and check out the Sims online, but be sure to check out the other offerings that are out there.
