According to the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND), there are over 1,200 naturopathic doctors (NDs) in Canada. This is one of the many reasons why prospective students interested in careers in this natural healthcare discipline are applying to any one of the many naturopathic medicine courses available in Canada. Of the 10 Canadian provinces, there are four that currently regulate this holistic medicine (British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan). It is important that aspiring students examine course requirements and prerequisites in accordance with these regulations before applying to any naturopathic programs. In most cases, applicants must have acquired three years of pre-medical sciences, including studies in biology, biochemistry, and chemistry, among others.
Students enrolled in accredited Canadian naturopathy programs gain a wealth of knowledge. For instance, typical naturopathy courses entail intensive curricula in naturopathic philosophies and fundamentals, Asian medicine, anatomy, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, physiology, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine, massage therapy, hydrotherapy, clinical nutrition, naturopathic manipulation, radiology, and many other related studies.
Once students have successfully completed benchmark training in naturopathy schools, students are required to pass NPLEX* board exams after the 2nd and 4th year of career training. (*NPLEX - Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations, approved in North America)
The practice of naturopathic medicine is permitted and regulated by the majority of the United States; however, the practice is prohibited in only two States, South Carolina and Tennessee. Full licensure is granted to those individuals who have completed all necessary educational requirements in 13 States and in two U.S. jurisdictions. (Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, Vermont, New Hampshire, Oregon, U.S. Virgin Islands, Utah and Washington) Naturopathy programs in the United States are similar to that of Canadian naturopathic medicine programs in that they encompass a four-year course of study, and teach similar curricula.
Overall, the goal of naturopathy programs is to give licensed NDs the six principles of healing, which includes “The healing power of nature,” “Identify and treat the cause,” “First do no harm,” “Treat the whole person,” “The physician as teacher,” and “Prevention.”
